PANATHENIAN STADIUM or “KALLIMARMARO”

Place to visit

The petal-shaped Panathenean Stadium was rebuilt in 1896 on the ruins of the original ancient stadium, to host the first modern-time Olympic Games held that year in Athens. It is called “Kallimarmaro” (in Greek “Made of beautiful marble”) as it is built as an exact replica of the original using the same, Pendelikon white marble as most of the monuments and statues of the classical period. It can seat about 80,000 people and is used for major open air athletic and cultural performances, like the annual finishing line of the International Classic Marathon Run.
