LYCABETTUS HILL

Place to visit Mount Lycabettus, “Lycabettus Hill” by its actual name, is a pine-tree covered hill (ca 300 meters above sea level) in the middle of modern Athens, offering a 360o degree view of the city sprawling around its base, from the mountains encircling the Athens plain, to the modern town with the Acropolis as the major landmark and, further south, to the Saronic gulf and the Peloponnesus coast islands. At sunset time the view is breathtaking, as the colors change until darkness sets-in and the lights of the city take over. The terrace at the top, with the white-washed chapel of St George, can be reached either on foot, following a winding path offering continuous views that starts at the Sarandapichou peripheral street, or by the underground funicular rail that starts from the end of Ploutarchou and Aristipoou streets in upper Kolonaki.
