Douglas’s Obelisk

History

An elegant stone obelisk, with bronze inscribed plates on its pedestal, is dedicated to Howard Douglas, Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands from 1835 to 1841. It was first placed at the southern end of the Spianada, in the place of the actual statue of Ioannis Kapodistrias, and transferred, in 1907, to its current position at the joining of Alexandras Avenue with the coastal Garitsa bay Avenue. It is called by the Corfiots “Douglas’ column”.
