Corfu, Greece

Statue of Field Marshal Schulenburg

History

At the left of the entrance to the Old Fortress, the Carrara marble statue by Antonio Corradini of Field Marshal Johann Mathias von der Schulenburg (1661-1747) on an elaborate pedestal, was sent to Corfu by the grateful Republic of Venice, in honor of his successful defense of Corfu as the General-in-Chief from the siege by the Ottomans in 1761. That victory, against all odds because of the heavy supremacy of the Ottoman forces against the weak multinational garrison of Corfu, constituted one of the factors of the final end of the Ottoman threat to Europe.
